Your Wheelchair Friendly Guide to Lynton and Lynmouth

A accessibility guide to staying at Lynmouth Holiday Retreat and exploring local area and towns Lynton and Lynmouth...

Whether you’re a full-time wheelchair user, have reduced mobility, or are just someone who appreciates a smooth path and a helpful ramp, Lynton and Lynmouth could be for you.

Let’s talk about one of North Devon’s most magical spots – Lynton & Lynmouth. Perched on the edge of Exmoor National Park where coast meets countryside, it’s all dramatic cliffs, sea air, cream teas, and ridiculously pretty views. And the best bit? It’s more accessible than you might think!

Here’s how to have a brilliant, barrier-free break with us at Lynmouth Holiday Retreat – and everything you need to know to make the most of the local area.

Nestled in a peaceful spot just above Lynmouth, our park is a haven for anyone wanting countryside calm with great connections. We’ve thought about all the little things:

  • Wheelchair-accessible toilets, showers, and private bathroom (just book in advance!)
  • Gently sloping pitches and a tarmac access route to the main facilities
  • Level areas to sit and picnic across the park
  • Dog wash station, laundry room and dishwashing area all within easy reach

Need help when you arrive? Our team is always around to offer a hand.

Lynmouth might be tucked away, but getting into town from the Retreat is smooth sailing:

Lyn Valley Taxi 🚐 – 07907 161 666 (available 7am–11pm)

Roadside Parking – Free 2-hour roadside parking from April to October (10am–6pm). Outside of those times? Park all day!

Blue Badge Holders – Park all day, any day, in designated bays throughout town

Bus Services – Hop on the 309/310 Stagecoach from Barbrook Bus Shelter for a scenic 55-minute ride to Barnstaple (Monday to Saturday)

Lynton & Lynmouth harbor; boats moored, hillsides, buildings.

Here are our favourite local attractions that are wheelchair-accessible or mostly accessible with assistance – and worth every second of your time…

Our first stop is Lynmouth Harbour, The pretty little harbour sits at the mouth of the West Lyn river. The town is at the foot of a deep wooded valley on the edge of Exmoor with the stunning scenery here sometimes referred to as “England’s Little Switzerland”.

On the quay at the end of the harbour is the Rhenish Tower. This was built in the 1860s to store saltwater for indoor baths but later fitted with a light to act as a beacon. It was badly damaged in the devastating floods of 1952 but rebuilt to its original form.

The world’s highest and steepest fully water-powered funicular railway is right on your doorstep! Glide from Lynmouth seafront to Lynton’s elevated viewpoint, and enjoy jaw-dropping views.

Accessibility Note: Due to narrow Victorian carriage design (540mm at the narrowest point), wheelchairs must be folded and mobility scooters cannot be accommodated. There are three steps into each carriage, and access paths have a slight gradient. Our friendly drivers will assist, but folding/loading of wheelchairs must be managed by someone in your group.

Lynton & Lynmouth street scene: church, shops, and car.

We love a mooch and Lynton’s got some gems. Many of the shops are wheelchair accessible with wide doorways and minimal steps. A few of our faves:

Lyn Candles – Hancrafted candles whilst you watch – high quality scented candles in an array of colours and designs

Charlie Friday’s Coffee Shop – Cosy, colourful, dog-friendly and always a warm welcome

The Greenhouse – Beautiful quirky cafe with delicious bites and morsels.
