The zoo was bought in August 2006 by Benjamin Mee, who reopened the zoo in July 2007, later writing a book about his experiences called We Bought a Zoo (2008). A 2011 film of the same title was loosely based on the book. In September 2014 the zoo became the charity Dartmoor Zoological Society, a charity that focuses on conservation, education and research.

Outstanding! This zoo isn’t your typical zoo; it’s a place where happy, healthy animals live in enclosures designed specifically for their size and needs, giving them plenty of space to move freely and be themselves. A huge shout-out to the staff and volunteers, who are all incredibly friendly, polite, and always happy to answer questions. Special mention to Harry — what a genuinely lovely person! He took the time to stand with my daughter and me, answering every question with such detail and kindness. We can’t wait to see him again!

The animals are simply marvellous, especially the tiger. Seeing such a magnificent animal up close and truly appreciating its size and beauty is an unforgettable experience. The layout of the zoo is beautiful, and you can tell that so much thought, care, and love has gone into both the zoo and the animals. It’s truly my favourite place to visit.

Visiting family in Cornwall and my family and I are BIG fans of “We bought a Zoo” film. We were very excited to visit the zoo where this film was based on. We went with a large group and check in was easy.

We had great interactions with Lottie, who was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. She had lots of information on the animals, parks, owners, and even the film facts! It was a pleasure meeting her and she added greatly to our pleasurable experience.

Liam was also a friendly, enthusiastic, and engaging staff member who was a welcome addition to our zoo experience. He was extremely knowledgeable about the animals and even seemed to follow along on our journey making us feel like we had a private tour guide! He had the best monkey sound impression we have ever heard! Thank you for taking the time to enhance our visit!

The cafe and food were a bit of a miss as they messed up our orders, but we did like how you had some options for our GF and DF children.

The grounds seemed to be in ok condition and the animal enclosures were clean. I didn’t see too many staff working or feeding or engaging with the animals, but we did go in the “off season.” Many of the little food huts were closed and I imagine they may have more staff in the summer.

The Tiger enclosure seems small and he kept walking in the same path over and over, please consider a new enclosure with more enrichment for him. There seemed to be quite a few empty enclosures and run down areas. I hope the park can sustain and put some money into the enhancement of some of the attractions.

Highly recommend for a great family friendly outing.

Just wanted to say a massive thank you to all the volunteers today who were so attentive. Because the zoo was so quiet it felt like we were getting a private tour! So many times we would be at an enclosure only for a volunteer to stumble across us so we were able to ask loads of questions about the animals we were looking at. (So sorry we didn't get names but the volunteer on uni placement who did the wolf talk, the chap who chatted to us about the leopards, and the two volunteers in the reptile house who introduced us to every animal in there). Although the zoo may be smaller than most, it means it is so easy to go back to animals that may have been hiding on your first visit or to pop back to see your favourites. We very much enjoyed all the animals that they had there, especially the resident house cat who we spent ages fussing. We also appreciated the free annual pass which comes included on your standard ticket, totally unexpected! We will definitely be sure to return more frequently now because of it! Such good value for money! We love We Bought A Zoo and love being able to support the zoo that inspired the film!

This is a lovely little wildlife park, it's great for a morning or afternoon but not enough for us for the day. There's lot's of animals to see and information on them all. The staff are all so friendly. The disabled parking is inside the park up the hill. If needed you need to purchase your tickets then they will open the gates and you can drive in.

There's a nice cafe selling light lunches as well as cakes. The animals all seem happy and well looked after although some of the enclosures could be larger. It does look like they are doing lots of work to improve this.

Great little Zoo, friendly knowledgeable staff. Don't go here expecting a massive Zoo with hundreds of animals, instead think of it as a more up close experience, the staff actually care for these animals it's not just a Saturday job so to speak, and as an added bonus they're not trying to sell you stuff every 10 paces.

So why only 4 out of 5 stars I hear you ask, well....... Their coffee sucks, that is it plain and simple, you might like it I didn't.

I had burger and chips from the Cafe, the burger was tasty and the chips were nice and crispy, my Mrs had Fish and Chips, the only thing she said was the fish could be a little bigger but I think we both agreed it is simple nice hot food which is all we wanted. Great job Dartmoor Zoo thank you.

We were visiting the area and thought we’d stop in to Dartmoor Zoo as they are supposed to have one of the largest collections of big cats.

The zoo wasn’t as big as we thought it might be, so you could easily walk around in half a day but it was still packed full with lots to see.

We met a few volunteers working at the zoo who were extremely knowledgable and obviously had a great passion for what they did. We attended some of their talks which were very interesting.

It was great to see lots of the animals and big cats up close.

I would have given 5* but I think certain areas of the zoo perhaps need a big of TLC, and some of the enclosures needed updating, with some of the larger animals seemingly needing bigger enclosures with more enrichment.
