Accessibility Information

Plymouth Barbican has many cobbled streets

The Mayflower Steps are close to the site in the Barbican area of Plymouth, south-west England, from which the Pilgrims are believed to have finally left England aboard the Mayflower, before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to settle in North America on 6 September 1620.

The traditional site of their disembarkation in North America is Plymouth Rock.

The Mayflower Steps are flanked by the British and American flags and mark the final English departure point of 102 passengers who set sail on the Mayflower in 1620.

This makes the beginning of something... Depends on your views. Great history spot.

Absolutely fascinating! The old harbour area known as the Barbican has several ancient buildings dating back hundreds of years. Including the oldest working bakery from late 1500's, which purportedly supplied ships biscuits to the Pilgrim Fathers, when they set sail from here to America in 1620!

Several other famous people came from Plymouth, details on boards. And Sir Francis Drake played bowls just yards from here, before he set sail to fight against the Spanish Armada in 1588.

If you like history and coffeee/ice cream, Plymouth is worth a trip!

We were doing a project for our American grand daughter and decided to go to the place where the pilgrims set out for a new life as the first American immigrants. Obviously the historical context the monument is nothing grand but the barbican area is fun to explore

Yep, they are steps. Enshrined with a literal and figurative doorway. You can’t go down the steps, but they’re there. It’s pretty much a guarantee the mayflower did not leave from here. But it’s a nice photo

As a family historian, with many ancestors who emigrated from England to the USA, I found this memorial interesting and nearby there is a list of passengers who sailed on the Mayflower. I have watched Genealogy programmes where descendants have been traced of those who set sail from near this point and it would be fun to find my own family connection. This will be of interest to those interested in the Mayflower story and there is a museum nearby. Free to visit.
