How We Celebrate St Piran’s Day in Cornwall

St Piran’s Day with Coast and Country Parks in Cornwall

Every year on the 5th of March Cornwall erupts in a celebration of all that makes this beautiful corner of the country so special – St Piran’s Day. A day that’s all about Cornwall’s patron saint and a time for locals and visitors alike to get out and experience the magic that is Cornwall.

St Piran is known as the patron saint of tin miners – his story is deeply rooted in Cornwall’s mining heritage. The legend has it that he stumbled upon tin when he saw a white cross burn into the ashes of his fire. That’s where the iconic black and white Cornish flag all started.

We at Coast and Country are totally proud to call Cornwall home – we’ve got breathtaking cliffs, stunning beaches and a history that dates back centuries – St Piran’s Day is a great excuse to let it all shine.

So if you’re staying with us here are some of our favourite ways to do the Cornish thing on St Piran’s Day.

Show Off the Cornish Colours!

You can’t go wrong with celebrating St Piran’s Day by wearing black and white – the colours of the Cornish flag.

You’ll see Cornish flags waving proudly all over the county, from village pubs and clifftops to coastal towns. It’s a small but really meaningful way to show your love for Cornwall.

Get a Proper Cornish Pasty Down You

No St Piran’s Day celebration is complete without stuffing your face with a proper Cornish pasty. All across Cornwall bakeries and cafes will be serving up fresh pasties and we reckon its a great excuse to indulge. In the Coast and Country office we take this tradition very seriously indeed – so much so that our team spends St Piran’s Day (albeit in the name of research) reviewing pasties from around the county.

Get Out for a Brisk Coastal St

Let’s be honest – Cornwall is at its absolute best when you’re out and about in it. St Piran’s Day is the perfect excuse to grab a layer and get out for a walk. One of our favourite local spots is Rame Head – just a short hop from us – and it’s breathtaking. The views of the coastline are stunning and the fresh Atlantic air does you the world of good.

Settle the Cream Tea Debate

Cornwall folks are very particular about how they like their scones and one thing is for certain – jam first, then cream is the only way to do it. In the Coast and Country office we had to have a little refresher on the rules – but our resident expert on all things Cornish is always happy to set us straight.

Just one more of those essential St Piran’s Day lessons we reckon.

Raise a Glass to Cornwall

St Piran’s Day is really about celebrating all that makes Cornwall so special – its people, landscapes and traditions. Whether it’s a pint of local ale, a cosy pub lunch, or just taking a moment to appreciate the view it’s a time to slow down and appreciate all the good things in life.

Feeling proud to call Cornwall our home, and we hope you do too.
