Sitting on the southern edge of Dartmoor, Ashburton has long been a stopping point between moorland and coast. The town grew wealthy in the medieval period through the wool trade, and that prosperity still shows in its long, wide high street and historic buildings.
The centre is lined with independent shops, antiques dealers, delis and cafés, many trading from centuries-old premises. St Lawrence Church dates back to the 12th century and anchors the town at the top of the hill, while narrow lanes lead down towards the River Ashburn.
Ashburton also has strong links to transport history. It was once served by a branch railway line from Totnes, opening in 1872, which helped move goods and people between Dartmoor and the coast. The line closed in the 1960s, but the old route still shapes the landscape around the town.
Today, Ashburton is known for its food scene, regular markets and easy access to Dartmoor walks. It works well as a base if you want moorland hikes without staying deep on the moor, or as a short stop when travelling between South Devon and the uplands.
