Montacute House is a masterpiece of Elizabethan Renaissance architecture and design

With its towering walls of glass, glow of ham stone and its surrounding gardens, it is a place of beauty and wonder

Come face to face with the past in the Long Gallery; measuring over 52 metres, it is the longest of its kind in England

The Gallery houses over 60 Tudor and Elizabethan portraits on loan from the National Portrait Gallery

Beautiful gardens surround Montacute, constantly changing, filling the house with scent in summer and providing an atmospheric backdrop for a winter walk

Whether you just want to let the children run and explore, or be inspired by the collections housed within the walls of Montacute, you will leave with lasting memories and a desire to soon return

You may even recognise some of the sights, as Montacute House featured in the BBC’s highly acclaimed production of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall

Impressive building but only a few rooms open at the moment due to the closure of both staircases for renovation. Cafe food was nice but they had run out of quite a few items when we went to visit. Nice courtyard for the cafe including some indoor seating. Excellent for walks from the building.

Pros: Gorgeous Elizabethan house, stunning long gallery, peaceful formal gardens, elegant and uncrowded feel. A real hidden gem.

Cons: Limited indoor access at times, quieter café, less to do for kids, best enjoyed in good weather.

Sadly the upper floors are currently closed, hopefully when I return I can see the house in all its splendour. The grounds though are worth an amble, beautifully kept and the wonderous hedge shapes all holding on to the history. Learnt that Lord Curzon rented the House for 10 years as a home for his mistress! A byegone era!

Brilliant morning walking around gorgeous gardens. There are longer walks for those that want and a lovely tea rooms for after you finished your wandering. Very reasonable price, good car park and electric hook up for those that might need it.

Although the top two floors are closed for renovation, the ground floor is open and worth a visit. Grounds are extensive and plenty of long walks available. Suitable for dogs although there were some cattle in the grounds, which didn't seem to mind visitors. Cafe was good with plenty of seating. We had an interesting talk on the exterior of the building from Ray, which we enjoyed.

A National Trust star. A fabulous garden with lots of different styles on display in a tiny area.

An imposing house with lots of rooms to explore and a long history to understand.

There’s a nice cafe and you can go for a stroke around the estate if the mood takes you.
